Welcome to Castine!

"Overlooking Penobscot Bay, this picturesque little town is one of the most authentic New England fishing villages you will ever encounter, complete with trim historic houses, elm-shaded streets, a village green, and a working harbor. Take a walk down Main Street, and you'll discover an outstanding example of late Victorian architecture, with all the trim, in the form of the Pentagöet Inn".

National Geographic Guide to Small Town Escapes - Castine, Maine 2000

Need a Room? The Pentagöet Inn Bed and Breakfast is a charming Queen Anne Victorian, nestled on a seaside bluff, graced with majestic elms. It overlooks the village and harbor of Castine, Maine. Built in 1894, the Inn is Castine's oldest, original "summer hotel" still welcoming guests of Penobscot Bay. This whimsical bed and breakfast has a prominent 3-story turret, gables, and a delightful wraparound porch lined with lush window boxes and wicker rockers. The porch is a favorite of photographers and artists, and a great spot to read the morning paper or enjoy an intimate dinner.

The Inn has 16 bedrooms, all with private baths. There is a hint of a tilt to the floors and doors - and with all the delightful nooks and crannies, each room is unique.

You will feel comfortably at home with the Inn's charming mix of antiques and collectibles. The rooms are furnished with attention to detail, antiques, vintage lithographs, luxury linens, down pillows, and old-fashioned floral coverlets. Most rooms have king-size beds; several have claw foot tubs and fireplaces, and one has a flower-bedecked balcony.

In the morning you'll wake to the smell of freshly-brewed coffee set outside your door. A full country breakfast will follow. Enjoy your breakfast on the deck or sit at a table for 2 in the dining room. You'll be well fortified for the day's explorations! The baking is done daily by the chef/owner - who for twenty years owned the Pink Rose Pastry Shop, a nationally acclaimed business in Philadelphia.

Come stay at the Pentagöet. Experience the timeless charm of Castine and see why it was selected as one of the most beautiful villages in New England.

The Passports Pub:

A cozy, old-world hideaway with a small oak bar, the Pub is an eclectic, ceiling-to-floor mix of vintage photos, paintings, and memorabilia from travels abroad. An early watercolor of Venetian gondolas hangs between a 3-foot oil of Lenin unearthed in a Tajikistan flea market and a large sepia portrait of Gandhi, courtesy of the Indian embassy in Zaire.

Furnished with antiques, Malaysian rattan, empire sofas, and slowly turning ceiling fans, it is a room that celebrates storytelling and adventure. It fits well in a town whose colorful history is rich with political upheaval and foreign intrigue.

What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves? This is the most important of all voyages of discovery, and without it, all the rest are not only useless, but disastrous. -- Thomas Merton
